Climate Expert Council warns: the state of Baden-Württemberg threatens to significantly miss its 2030 climate targets

The Climate Expert Council, an independent scientific body that advises the state of Baden-Württemberg across all sectors in the areas of climate protection and climate change adaptation, warns: as the panel of experts explained at a meeting of the Environment Committee, the state of Baden-Württemberg is at risk of falling significantly short of its climate targets. The Council of Experts predicts that the targets for 2030 will be exceeded by more than 6 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents and calls for immediate countermeasures. The Council of Climate Experts is calling on the state government to present an immediate climate protection programme and provide the necessary funding. In addition, framework conditions must be defined that make it possible to achieve the targets. According to the German Council of Climate Experts, the targets will be missed in almost all sectors - with transport being particularly hard hit: it is predicted that the target values will be exceeded by 50 %. The Council of Experts has formulated specific measures for all sectors to counter this threatening development. However, these would have to be implemented consistently. The Council of Climate Experts also expressed its concern about the dwindling role of climate protection in the public perception. The Council of Experts sees the role of the state government here in consistently standing up for climate protection.
The Expert Council is made up of six scientists from the fields of environmental and climate research and accompanies the state of Baden-Württemberg on the path to climate neutrality in 2040. ifeu Managing Director Prof. Dr Martin Pehnt has been a member of the committee since it was founded in 2021.
