2014 MGE waste balance for Berlin

The MGE balance is drawn up biennially and includes waste that must be transferred to a public waste management organisation for disposal, and waste to which this rule does not apply. Alternating with the balance for waste that must be transferred to a public waste management organisation for disposal, including DSD substances, it fulfils legal requirements as regards waste balance reporting. This combination of waste and MGE balance far outstrips the waste balance used in other federal states. The MGE balance for 2014 is the third balance of this kind. In 2010, a material flow and greenhouse gas balance was drawn up for the first time, to which an environmental balance was added in 2012.

The new profile design used in the MGE balance for 2014 provides an optimised overview of the 37 types of waste studied in Berlin. It also covers recyclability and recoverability rates, which are defined and classified on the basis of (European) law in the study.

The 2014 balance analysed some 6.7 million tonnes of waste in the state of Berlin in terms of material flow and relevant environmental impacts.
