TREMOD - Transport Emission Model

           
 

What is TREMOD?

The R+D project "Daten- und Rechenmodell: Schadstoffemissionen aus dem motorisierten Verkehr in Deutschland 1960 bis 2030" is carried out by IFEU on behalf of the German Federal Environmental Agency since January 1993. Scope of the project is the analysis of motorised transport in Germany , i.e. its mileage, energy use and emissions. Part of the project is the development and updating of corresponding calculation software. This programme is called "TREMOD - Transport Emission Model" and is available as an updated version 5.2 since March 2012. Due to its volume and complexness, TREMOD is not available to the public.
TREMOD is currently used by the following institutions: German Federal Environmental Agency, Federal Highway Research Institute and several federal ministries, Association of the German Automotive Industry VDA (since 1996), Association of the German Petroleum Industry MWV (since 1996), Deutsche Bahn AG (since 1997), Deutsche Lufthansa (since 2006) and TUI (since 2006). These partners conceptually and finan-cially support the enhancement of the model and its continuous updating to state-of-the-art scientific knowl-edge as well as new legislation and technology.
In the "road transport" sector, TREMOD is harmonised with the Handbook Emission Factors for Road Transport. This means that on the one hand side the emission factors of HBEFA are used in TREMOD calculations. On the other hand side HBEFA uses the fleet composition calculated with TREMOD for Germany, to estimate average emission factors.

What is the basis of TREMOD?

 

For every year between 1960 and 2012 and in scenarios until 2030, TREMOD analyses all means of passen-ger transportation (cars, two-wheelers, busses, trains, aircraft) and all means of freight transportation (lorries, light-duty commercial vehicles and trailers, trains, inland navigation vessels, aircraft), until 1993 further differ-entiated into East- and West-Germany, afterwards as reunified Germany.
The transport performance of all these vehicles and for road transport also the vehicle mileage is estimated. This mileage of road vehicles is further differentiated by federal motorways, all extra-urban roads as well as urban roads; additionally the annual mean mix of traffic situations on the different road types is estimated. En-ergy use and emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, hydrocarbons (NMHC, CH4, benzene), carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, particulate matter and soot can thus be calculated in the respective differentiation. Emissions are presented as direct emissions, i.e. emissions directly emitted by the vehicle, as well as indirect emissions, i.e. emissions from the upstream energy generation and supply chain.
Motorised road transport is calculated in greater detail due to its relevance for impacts on humans and nature. Data on mileage, energy use and emissions are collected in maximum differentiation by technology, vehicle size (engine displacement, mass), vehicle age, load factor, road type, traffic situation, gradient of road, drive pattern (cold start temperature, length of distance driven, parking time before start) etc. and if required pro-vided in that differentiated way.

What is TREMOD used for?

 

Due to its high degree of detail TREMOD allows for providing baseline data and calculated results in almost every differentiation. Thus a lot of questions can be answered with TREMOD results and scenarios and the use range is broad. The most important application areas of TREMOD are:

  • Compliance with national and international reporting commitments of the German Federal Government in the sector "Energy and emissions of transport".
  • Preparation of political decisions (e. g. emission standards, supportive measures); Monitoring of the effective-ness of measures using scenarios.
  • Monitoring of reduction targets, e. g. international commitments (NEC-Directive, Kyoto-Protocol).
  • Environmental transport data base, e. g. for life cycle analyses or environmental comparisons. TREMOD-data is e.g. used, amongst others, in Probas, Renewbility, GEMIS, Umberto, UmweltMobilCheck, EcoPassenger and EcoTransIT.
