The spatial component plays a pivotal role in the assessment of heat supply options in the building stock. Key research questions on long-term technological and economic potentials of heat networks infrastructure, shallow and deep geothermal energy, large-scale solar energy, industrial and commercial waste heat, or on the installation of thermal storage can only be answered with a fine-scale spatio-temporal calibration of the long-term heat demand trajectory against local heat sources.
For this purpose, the ifeu collaborates with the Geomer GmbH and the GEF Ingenieur AG to develop and maintain the heat map, a bottom-up model of the energy classification and spatial distribution of all residential and non-residential buildings in the Federal Republic of Germany.
The heat map combines information on the geometry of individual buildings from the 3D building models of the state surveying offices with type of use data from the real estate information system, fine-scale data on the age structure of buildings from the housing census, and site-specific climate data of the German Meteorological Service. In another step, all of the above is linked with heat consumption calculations carried out in the building model GEMOD.
The heat map adapts the results of long-term renovation scenarios from GEMOD for spatial analyses. Thus, it is possible to model interactions between different renovation strategies with site-specific heat source potentials, and to infer complex spatial development strategies.
