SWM-GHG Calculator (2023) is updated

The Solid Waste Management (SWM) Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Calculator, first published in 2009, offers decision-makers in emerging and developing countries guidance on the GHG impacts of waste treatment options and possible mitigation effects. Since then, the background data has changed and treatment options, like mechanical-biological treatment or stabilisation plants, have become more relevant in developing countries and emerging economies. The current updated SWM-GHG Calculator takes these aspects into account.

The now revised tool includes current factors, e.g. according to IPCC 2019, and there are more comprehensive input options for users. Commissioned by GIZ, KfW Entwicklungsbank and funded by BMZ, the manual has also been updated and now contains some background information on GHG balances, tools and methods.
