R-concrete as a building material alternative: funding programme for climate-friendly building construction

ifeu recently completed a research project that developed and tested approaches to optimising ready-mixed concrete as a building material. The project, carried out on behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment, showed that climate-friendly and resource-saving concrete (R-concrete) can be produced by recycling processed construction waste:

This is made possible by using raw materials from the material cycle (RC aggregates), gravels and sands from the wet classification of excavated soil masses, and carbonation of old concretes that are used as aggregates. This approach closes material flows and ultimately creates the conditions for a consistent recycling economy in the long term.

The Ministry of the Environment of Baden-Württemberg has currently set up a support programme to introduce this alternative building material as a common building material throughout the state and to make it available. Two guides provide both processors of mineral construction waste and ready-mixed concrete plants with more detailed information on the production of this building material.
