Save the Date: SEEMLA Final Event and Workshop, Brussels 20th and 21st November 2018

The overarching goal of SEEMLA is the reliable and sustainable exploitation of biomass from Marginal Lands (MagL) which are used neither for food nor feed production and are furthermore not posing an environmental threat. On this basis, SEEMLA seeks to establish suitable innovative land-use strategies for a sustainable production of plant-based energy on MagL and, at the same time, to improve general ecosystem services.

From the beginning of 2016, the SEEMLA consortium has worked to assess the availability and suitability of MagL as alternative production sites for renewable resources, to identify and classify MagL in order to develop specific land use options for different types of sites and to develop and implement a set of specific indicators for assessing potentials for biomass production at MagL and indicators for ecosystem services.

To test the effectiveness of the methodology, the project applied this approach in pilot areas, representative for Mediterranean, Central and Eastern Europe, and evaluated both the environmental aspects and potential environmental impacts (among others by means of life cycle assessment (LCA)) and economic as well as social implications.

The actions and the results achieved will be presented during an event which will be held in Brussels on the 20th and 21st November 2018.

This event will be organized in collaboration with ADVANCEFUEL and a number of other EU projects working in the field of innovative cropping schemes on marginal land (FORBIO, MAGIC, BECOOL, LIBBIO) and in the areas of value chains and business models (UP-RUNNING, GRACE).

On the morning of 20th November (from 8.30 to 13.00), the SEEMLA project will hold its final event to present the approach it has developed and the results from the project which was carried out in the context of the EU’s policies for advanced biofuels and bioenergy.

On the afternoon of 20th November (from 14.00 to 17.30) and the morning of 21st November (from 8.30 to 14.00), ADVANCEFUEL and SEEMLA will hold a joint workshop, contributing to the ADVANCEFUEL project’s understanding of barriers regarding biomass supply. The event will scrutinise innovative cropping schemes, explore the challenges and opportunities of different supply and value chains, and compare potential business models of feedstock provisioning.

An evening reception will be held on the afternoon of 20th November (from 17.30 to 20.30), open only to those who are participating in other sessions.
