Study on the sustainability of commercially used textiles published
More and more textiles are being produced around the world, driven by trends such as ‘fast fashion’. This ever-increasing quantity of textiles is associated with considerable negative environmental effects: The textile sector is one of the world's largest water users and contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.
The aim of the DiTex project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, was to test circular workwear and bed linen made from recycled fibres and to evaluate their effects on quality, resources and sustainability. As part of the project, ifeu assessed the environmental impact of conventional and circular textiles - from production to disposal.
The project was able to show that circular textiles made from recycled fibres can keep up with conventional textiles in terms of quality and have considerable environmental advantages compared to the reference textiles. Circular strategies can thus contribute to a more resource-efficient textile economy and the market for commercially used textiles could take on a pioneering role.
