Current demand and reduction potentials of base metals in Germany and the EU

In Germany and the EU, metal consumption is dominated by only a few metals: Iron, aluminium, copper and nickel. The EU classifies copper, aluminium and nickel as critical and as strategic raw materials. The mining and processing of metal ores is also often associated with negative climate and environmental impacts. Against this backdrop, this project identifies potential savings in the use of the base metals iron, copper, aluminium and nickel as part of a brief study. Firstly, current and future demand is described. Possible reduction potentials are then identified for selected sectors and product groups in order to reduce the enormous demand for metals. A particular focus is placed on the transport and construction sectors and the use of secondary metals. Finally, political recommendations are derived based on the results.
