Germany’s most comprehensive CO2 calculator for foodstuffs and meals went online in late 2016. It was commissioned by Unilever, and ifeu calculated the CO2 balance sheets for a variety of foodstuffs for inclusion in the calculator. The calculator made it possible to determine the CO2 balance sheet of individual foodstuffs and an extensive range of recipes by means of a straightforward drag-and-drop function. It was also possible to compare vegan, vegetarian, flexitarian and other forms of nutrition.

Update october 2021: The food CO2 calculator operated by Unilever is currently offline.

Alternatives with current ifeu calculations:

For our project KEEKS (for the BMUB within the framework of the NKI), a web app for school kitchens (but not only) was recently created, for which we also did the calculations: There, climate- and energy-friendly recipes in various quantities as well as a lot of background information are available.

The publication Environmental Footprints of Dishes and Food in Germany (from 2020) also contains the CO2 footprints of many foods in Germany.
