Greenhouse gas inventory of the Moroccan transport sector

On behalf of the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), ifeu supported the Moroccan Ministry of Transport in compiling a greenhouse gas inventory for land-based transport and establishing an MRV (Measurement, Reporting and Verification) system. The project first identified possible data sources for road and rail transport, then collected and analysed the data from various partners and finally compiled it into a bottom-up GHG inventory. In order to facilitate the continuation of the process, ifeu also conducted workshops on technical issues with the Moroccan partners and advised them on the necessary institutionalisation.

The databases available at the Moroccan authorities are very extensive. This allowed for a detailed analysis, which made it possible to create a bottom-up inventory with comparatively low uncertainties. This greenhouse gas inventory for 2022 thus forms a good basis for updates and improvements that the Moroccan side will carry out on its own in the coming years.
