Renewable fuel alternatives for mobile machinery

Mobile machinery and devices (non-road mobile machinery or NRMM) have a relevant share in nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions in Germany. Stringent emission limit values for NRMM were introduced much later than in road transport, and many older diesel engines are still in use. Alternative fuels can be used to reduce pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions, in some cases significantly. On behalf of the FNR, ifeu conducted a short study to show the national emission data and the technical options and examples for the use of renewable fuels in NRMM. The use of biodiesel offers the greatest potential for reductions in the short term. Machinery with gas engines (in particular if they burn biogas) and electric drives (with renewable electricity) could prove effective in environmental and cost terms in the medium term.
