SENSATION
Sorbent Assisted Carbon Capture Tailored for Low CO2 Concentrations from Air and Low Industrial CO2 Emissions

The SENSATION project aims at developing and optimizing a sorbent-based carbon capture concept for low CO2 concentration streams. Capturing CO2 from industrial off gas as well as direct air capture (DAC) represent essential instruments to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 °C. However, for low CO2 concentrations no suitable technologies are available to date. Due to high costs and energy requirement, technologically feasible options like capture by solid adsorbents have not reached the market yet.
SENSATION will therefore test various available adsorbent materials, optimize the coating process onto a substrate monolith, design a cost and energy efficient system, and eventually demonstrate the developed technology at two industrial locations both for DAC and low CO2 concentration off gas.
ifeu leads the integrated sustainability assessment that accompanies the project in terms of environmental, social, and techno-economic compatibility. The work package will highlight optimization potentials, synergies and trade-offs between individual sustainability goals, opportunities and challenges.
