Strategies of the National Climate Initiative

Background

Climate protection and energy efficiency measures do not only lead to a direct reduction of the environmental impact and import of energy, but also have diverse effects on the economy. The Federal Ministry for the Environment has initiated measures within the National Climate Initiative (NKI), that significantly contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emission by 40%, compared to 1990. With this joint project the NKI shall be integrated into a scientific and social context and into the framework of political instruments and public funding.

Focus of the Project

The project analyses options to improve efficiency and climate protection in Germany in terms of the technical and economic potentials, the parties involved, the export prospects and political instruments. Furthermore, the crucial barriers to tapping the potentials are identified and economic effects modelled. Based on this, strategic recommendations for the further development of mechanisms and objects of funding are being conducted.

Effectiveness analyses are being carried out on potential new measures for funding within the framework of the NKI and on other political instrument.

A network to exchange knowledge and experience is being setup for the scientific community and public stakeholders – the actors of the NKI.
