From the Present to the Future: The Transformation of Housing Estates in Small Towns

Brief report commissioned by the Kleinstadt Akademie

Small towns have a diverse housing stock that varies according to when it was built and its architectural typology. Depending on their location, small towns face very different challenges: whilst in outlying areas the focus is often on strategies for utilising vacant properties, central locations with a high demand for housing require strategies for redensification. The architectural transformation of housing estates must be conceived and developed in tandem with a shift in living culture.

The project sets out practical recommendations that provide guidance to staff in local authorities in small towns on the transformation of housing estates.
