Wood construction as a solution strategy for sustainable urban development
As part of the Baden-Württemberg timber construction initiative, the first phase of the project involved developing a concept for integrating timber construction as a solution strategy for sustainable urban development. Using the specific tasks and problems of a medium-sized town in the affluent suburbs of Stuttgart as an example, solutions were outlined that allow timber construction to be used as a building block in the redensification of existing urban quarters, the revitalisation of commercial areas and the development of new residential areas. This was done in collaboration with an architectural firm renowned for its expertise in timber construction and ebök from Tübingen.
It is clear that resource-efficient solutions in urban development can only be achieved if options for action are identified at a very early stage in the planning process and evaluated from a sustainability perspective. These options serve as a decision-making aid for planning authorities and political bodies, as a means of communication in participation processes and as a means of gradual optimisation. Efforts to increase resource efficiency are generally started far too late, with the drawing up of the development plan.
