In May 2019, Erlangen became the first local authority in Bavaria to declare a climate emergency, thereby recognising climate protection as a top priority. Based on a preliminary study entitled “Climate Emergency”, the City Council decided in November 2020 that Erlangen should adhere to the 1.5°C target and achieve climate neutrality across the entire city by 2030. Erlangen had already been a pioneering municipality in the field of climate protection. With the resolution on climate neutrality by 2030, Erlangen has taken another important step towards fulfilling its contribution to the Paris Agreement and limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

In November 2020, the “Climate Awakening Roadmap” was adopted by the city council in Erlangen. It includes the objective of meeting the 1.5°C target at the municipal level and using the CO21 residual budget as a basis and control parameter. This will enable climate neutrality to be achieved by 2030. The resolution also includes climate protection measures for the city administration and municipal subsidiaries. Alongside the resolution, immediate measures for the city as a whole were also adopted. These measures were further specified and supplemented during the drafting of the “Climate Awakening Roadmap”. This final report presents the “Climate Awakening Roadmap”.
