The study contains descriptions of production processes for the more environmentally friendly manufacture of chemicals and information on the associated environmental aspects. One focus is on decarbonisation/defossilisation, but the use of hazardous substances and emissions are also addressed. Both technologies that are already in commercial use and those currently under development are examined, e.g. production of hydrogen, ammonia and industrial carbon black, methanol-to-olefins, Fischer-Tropsch processes, electrification of steam crackers (cracking of hydrocarbons using steam), alternative feedstocks, minimisation of chlorine use, possibilities for flexible plant operation, and general techniques with the potential to reduce the environmental impact.
