As part of the project, researchers examined how a culture of sufficient housing can be promoted in Germany—understood as housing that is needs-based, intergenerational, and environmentally sustainable.
The research project combines qualitative and quantitative methods—stakeholder interviews, focus groups, a nationwide public survey, municipal workshops, as well as ecological, legal, and housing-potential analyses. The goal is to assess the attitudes of single-family home residents—particularly those in the post-family phase—to identify realistic alternatives, and to highlight barriers such as emotional attachments, a lack of relocation options, or legal uncertainties. At the same time, the scope for municipal action is being examined, as municipalities are key actors in supporting and implementing a culture of sufficiency in housing, and municipal actors are important drivers of a resilient and sufficient housing policy.
