EleCity: The Electrified City - Sustainable Cities in the Context of Energy Transition. Conferences in Hanoi/Manila/Bangkok

The five megatrends energy transition, mobility growth, urbanization, digitization and air pollution control for future development are linked by the increasing growth of electrification of the future energy system. The focus is no longer only on CO2-free power generation but rather on the intelligent linking of the electricity, heat and transport sectors through the development of digital and smart processes, services and products. The energy transition thus integrates climate protection, abatement of air pollution and requires proper governance of these processes. To this end, the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) provided funding to the Institute of Energy Economics and Rational Energy Use (IER) of the University of Stuttgart and five other German partner organizations for three conferences in three urban regions in Southeast Asia.   Asian partners were the Clean Energy and Sustainable Development Laboratory in Hanoi/Vietnam, the School of Urban and Regional Planning of the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City/Philippines and the Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment at KMUTT in Bangkok/Thailand. Bernd Franke, scientific director of ifeu, presented Potentials for Electrification and Energy Efficiency in Industry and Commerce. Researchers from the universities, government and industry officials, NGOs and German embassy representatives attended the conferences and laid the foundation for future cooperation in a potential long-term project.
