ifeu-Podcast: Attention, upstream chain! Liquefied natural gas is more harmful to the climate than thought

In future, Germany wants to satisfy its gas hunger by importing natural gas from countries such as Qatar, Indonesia and the USA. In episode 9 of the ifeu podcast, physicist Daniel Münter explains why the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and pipeline natural gas is already very damaging to the climate and what Germany and the EU can do to keep emissions as low as possible.

The supply of natural gas has a much greater impact on the climate than previously assumed - this is shown by a new ifeu study, the results of which are summarised by researcher Daniel Münter in the podcast. Until now, only estimated values were available for the production, processing, liquefaction and transport of the gas, the so-called upstream chain, all of which were set very low. Through comprehensive calculations based on studies, extrapolations, satellite data and measurement data from the USA, the ifeu researchers have now been able to prove that the pre-chain emissions actually cause significant damage to the climate.

The podcast was produced by Nora Lessing and Marcus Franken from the agency Ahnen&Enkel in Berlin, which specialises in energy and environmental issues.

The podcast (in German) can be listened and subscribed to via the Webseite ifeu, Spotify, Google and Apple Podcasts as well as Youtube .
