Public sector vehicle fleets are to be sustainably converted. In practice, instruments developed by ifeu in the project "Environmentally friendly procurement of cars by public authorities", funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU), are intended to provide support. Procurers from the federal states of Berlin, Brandenburg and Hesse involved in the project as well as other stakeholders were included in the development process.

The instruments are intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution caused by public vehicle fleets. The results include the following products:

  • Concrete environmental minimum requirements for cars to be procured and possible additional award criteria
  • Needs assessment and information tool (online) for preparing the procedure
  • Life cycle cost calculator to support the evaluation of tenders

The final report and other products from the project are publicly available on the German online tool page: www.nachhaltige-oeffentliche-pkw-beschaffung.de

There will also be a follow-up project from November 2023 to the end of 2024. In this, the application of the developed tools will be evaluated in practice and the project will be expanded to include light commercial vehicles.

What's more, the results of the completed project have already met with great interest. For example, the project was very well received by other federal states at the state meeting of the Competence Centre for Sustainable Procurement (KNB) in March. This was also reflected in the lively attendance of over 70 people at the final event in June. The project team also received a request from the practice-oriented magazine VergabeFokus for an article to be published in early 2024.
