CERISEA
Competitive production of HMF and derivatives for an Eco-designed and Resilient Industry towards Sustainable European Autonomy

5-HMF (5-Hydroxymethylfurfural) is a key intermediate between biomass and biochemicals and is known as the “Sleeping Giant”, due to its versatility and ability to replace a broad range of conventionally produced building blocks. However, today, there are no large-scale industrial and profitable processes to produce HMF. The CERISEA project aims to awaken this Sleeping Giant.
CERISEA will establish an industrial-scale production of the bio-based platform chemical 5-HMF (5-Hydroxymethylfurfural) based on fructose and advanced fructose from non-food side streams and will demonstrate a broad range of sustainable applications for 5-HMF. These include araminolic resins, crop science, functionalised bio-polymers (modified starch), functionalised compounds, polyesters, polyamides, polyurethanes and plasticizers. CERISEA bio-based products will meet market and technical performance requirements, thus facilitating the adoption of these solutions in the market. For more details, please visit the project’s website.
Within CERISEA, ifeu is leading the work package on "Integrated Sustainability Assessment" and is responsible in particular for the environmental assessment including LCA.
