transform-R

Shaping the energy and mobility transition as a social-ecological transformation in the FrankfurtRhineMain region

Transform-R explores policy options for municipalities and districts to promote mobility and energy transition. To this end, ideas for five exemplary Living Labs in the region have been developed in a co-creative process. These will be used to develop and test new structures and processes for cooperation in the region, with the aim of disseminating new approaches and ideas for accelerating the mobility and energy transition.

The Living Labs selected in the co-creative process are:

  • the implementation of cycle routes as part of a regional cycle path network
  • creating liveable and socially just urban neighbourhoods through mobility transformation
  • the implementation of photovoltaics on car parking
  • mobility experiments for sustainable excursion mobility and more environmentally friendly commuting

Existing structures of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main Regional Authority and other institutional actors in the multi-level political-administrative system will be used. In addition, informal cooperation processes will be used to strengthen the participation of stakeholders and citizens in the project.

The overall objective is to strengthen the socio-ecological transformation of regional energy and mobility systems and to formulate scientific and practical conclusions for further dissemination and application. Transform-R aims to provide the following insights:

  • how successful community or neighbourhood-based transformation processes can be extended to the regional level,
  • how experimental implementation through living labs in different places of a region can be used to drive the mobility and energy transition in a larger area,
  • how the objectives of a mobility and energy transition can be combined, and regional transformation synergies can be used,
  • how a mission statement ‘sustainable mobility in regions’ can be established together with the relevant stakeholders (e.g. administrative bodies in the multi-level political system, private companies, NGOs), and
  • what methodological and policy findings can be drawn from the experimental and participatory implementation of Living Labs for the scaling up of the social-ecological transformation.
