Heat pump initiative III
Third scientific evaluation of BMWK measures to implement a heat pump initiative
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action’s (BMWK) heat pump initiative promotes the increased use of heat pumps in buildings in order to achieve climate protection targets. As heat pumps primarily use renewable ambient heat to generate heat and the electricity required is becoming increasingly decarbonised, they are a key lever for achieving climate neutrality in the buildings sector. By 2030, 6 million heat pumps would be required to achieve this.
The accompanying scientific project supported the BMWK in making evidence-based decisions and implementing measures for the Heat Pump Initiative, as well as optimising the conditions for the use of heat pumps. The focus was on electric heat pumps in small capacity classes for buildings, neighbourhoods and building complexes.
Through continuous analysis – based on previous accompanying projects and current research needs – specific barriers and potential solutions were identified. The project provides well-founded assessments and recommendations for action to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the BMWK’s measures.
