Scientific monitoring of the National Climate Initiative IV

Since 2008, the National Climate Initiative (NKI) of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) has been funding programmes, projects, investments and concepts to initiate the implementation of national climate protection goals throughout Germany.

From the very beginning, the NKI has been continuously developed. Accompanying, retrospective and forward-looking studies, assessments and evaluations have been carried out and conceptual ideas have been developed to improve the NKI.

Since the initiation of the NKI, more than 45,200 projects (as of the end of 2022) with a funding volume of around 1.54 billion euros have been carried out, resulting in a greenhouse gas reduction of around 38.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents. The evaluations already carried out for the years 2008-2011, 2012-2014, 2015-2017 and 2018-2019 confirmed the effects of the NKI funding as a lever for climate protection. The evaluation for the years 2020-2021 is currently being processed and will be published shortly.

The Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology has commissioned a large consortium with the evaluation, monitoring and adaptation. ifeu is involved in all work packages. Particular focal points are the monitoring of the 100% Climate Protection Master Plan, the further development of the municipal guideline and the further development of the funding portfolio of the NKI.
