This interim report documents the work carried out under UAP4.1 within the KartAL V project (Mapping of the Anthropogenic Layer V – Strategy Development for a National Urban Mining Process) to quantify macroeconomic material flows and changes in stock levels over the period 2010–2020. The quantification for the years 2015 and 2020 was carried out in accordance with the top-down approach applied within the KartAL I project (Schiller et al. 2015), using the two analytical layers developed there.
For analysis layer 1, the net addition to stock (NAS) of the anthropogenic pool, which was available in KartAL I for the period 1960 to 2010, was first supplemented and recalculated for the year 2010 and up to and including 2020 on the basis of the material account of the Environmental Accounts (UGR) (2023). Due to changes in the calculation standards of Destatis, discontinuities have arisen from 2010 onwards, the year of the last calculation standard according to Schiller et al. (2015). These differences have been addressed and are summarised here in consultation with the client.
The aim of analysis layer 2 is to provide a more nuanced assessment of the data considered in analysis layer 1. A differentiated presentation of goods or groups of goods by material category, based on production statistics, foreign trade statistics and waste statistics, enables a more in-depth examination of material flows into and out of the anthropogenic pool. In principle, the identification and evaluation of material flows could be carried out using the methodology in KartAL I; however, adjustments to the approach were necessary during the implementation of Analysis Layer 2, as challenges arose with the current data situation, particularly due to data gaps and (in some cases retroactive) revisions in the calculation figures of the statistical bases.
