Timber construction as part of municipal climate action and sustainable urban development in Weinstadt

Baden-Württemberg timber construction initiative

Authors: Christian Dierks, Corvin Veith, Florian Knappe

Wood is a wonderful building material with many positive properties – both for the residents of a house built with it and for the city and even the climate. So it was only natural that four years ago – in autumn 2020 – the town of Weinstadt applied to the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Food, Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection and took part in the call for ideas ‘Wood construction as part of municipal climate protection’ as part of the state's timber construction initiative. The funding was approved in May 2021.

Since then, the city, led by the urban planning office, has been working on its own local timber construction initiative. The aim is not only to design building developments in such a way that potential builders opt for timber as a construction material, but also to develop models, guidelines and recommendations for other municipalities – a kind of toolbox that others can draw on. After all, what works in Weinstadt can also be implemented elsewhere in the country.
