Expansion Strategies for Electric Road Systems (ERS) in Europe

The aim of this paper is to discuss the development of a future ERS network for Europe and to outline possible implementation steps. The first section discusses the derivation of potential first corridors and a possible target network. Two exemplary cross-border pilots will then be used to discuss the potential of the technology (Section 4) and to provide an overview of national planning aspects of the cross-border implementation (Section 5). The final section summarises the main findings of the paper and discusses which strategies for the cross-border development of ERS in Europe can be derived therefrom and which European or bilateral coordination processes would be necessary for this purpose.
