Power sector effects of alternative options for de-fossilizing heavy-duty vehicles—Go electric, and charge smartly

Autor*innen: Wolf-Peter Schill, Carlos Gaete-Morales, Julius Jöhrens, Florian Heining

The authors investigate the power sector implications of different options for defossilizing heavy-duty vehicles. They find that flexibly charged battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), also in combination with electric road systems for dynamic charging, lead to the lowest power sector costs, while hydrogen and e-fuels lead to the highest costs. Indirect electrification options suffer from poor energy efficiency, which outweighs their potential flexibility benefits. BEVs further favor solar photovoltaic energy, while hydrogen and e-fuels favor wind power and increase fossil electricity generation.
