KliOL: Aiming for climate-neutral hospitals

Most people probably think first and foremost of air and road transport as major sources of greenhouse gas emissions. However, the German healthcare sector also makes a significant contribution. At 6%., its GHG emissions even exceeds air traffic by a factor of two. In the NKI project Climate Protection in Hospitals by Optimising Supply Chains (KliOL), ifeu and the Institute of Global Health, Heidelberg University Hospital jointly prepared a comprehensive GHG balance for Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD) and began to implement concrete climate protection measures for many operational work areas.
A greenhouse gas calculator for hospitals is available free of charge which was created in collaboration with the Competence Centre for Climate-Resilient Medicine and Healthcare Facilities (KliMeG) (https://klimeg.de/rechner-co2-bilanzierung/). Almost 230,000 tonnes of CO2e were calculated in the balance for 2022. Particularly high emissions are caused by supply chains of pharamceuticals and medical products as well as by transport emissions of staff and patients.

Some implemented GHG reduction measures include a change in the prescription of propellant-free inhalers, sustainable menus in the catering department and the promotion of e-bikes and job tickets for employees. Overall, there is great potential for further reduction measures (e.g. reusable products in the operating theatre, improved waste management), which are being tackled by the UKHDs newly established Sustainability Unit in collaboration with the Sustainability Network (NeNa).
