Study to the "roll-out" of renovation sprints published

Haus in Sanierung mit Baugerüst

Around 16 million detached and semi-detached houses must be climate-neutral by 2045. In addition to climate-friendly heating systems and heating networks, this also requires the energy-efficient renovation of building envelopes. However, the current renovation rate for detached and semi-detached houses is far too low.

The study published today summarises the main obstacles for homeowners and companies: Current renovation programmes can be complex, lengthy and expensive. For residents in particular, however, it is crucial that renovations are simple, as quick as possible and affordable. This is exactly where the renovation sprint comes in: with process optimisations by renovation coaches, construction site assistants and a construction schedule that is accurate to the hour, so that the construction site only takes one month.

The study commissioned by Agora Energiewende - in addition to the practical report on two pilot construction sites that has already been published - highlights the potential that the renovation sprint can tap into. In the medium term, cost reductions of around 30 per cent are achievable, which means lower costs for customers and enables higher wages and more projects for tradespeople.

On the other hand, a catalogue of measures for political support was developed - under the leadership of ifeu - to encourage the implementation of renovation sprints on a broad scale. Important policy measures include a central market development centre and new qualifications for refurbishment coaches, the caretakers of the renovation sprints. Short-term financial incentives and a pragmatic adjustment of the funding landscape help to incentivise supply and demand; streamlined planning and approval processes save time and money.
