Six building blocks for multimodal and climate-friendly mobility - what stakeholders can do
Current study for the Rhine-Main-Neckar region on the mobility of the future The Darmstadt Rhine-Main-Neckar region has great potential to master the challenges of the urgently needed transport transition through the support of numerous regional players and to become a nationwide role model for other metropolitan regions as the "region of mobility of the future". This is the overarching conclusion of a study commissioned by the ENTEGA NATURpur Institute from the ifeu Institute and ISOE. The study analysed how stakeholders in the Rhine-Main-Neckar region can contribute to a successful transport transition.
Local council adopts heating plan for Heidelberg
The roadmap for implementing the heating transition in Heidelberg was adopted by the municipal council on November 15. The main focus: the large-scale expansion of "green" district heating. The new Building Energy Act (Gebäudeenergiegesetz GEG), which comes into force on January 1, 2024, and the climate protection targets for Baden-Württemberg make a municipal heating plan necessary for the city of Heidelberg too: The aim is for heat generation in Heidelberg to be completely climate-neutral by 2040.
Sustainable conversion of public vehicle fleets
Public sector vehicle fleets are to be sustainably converted. In practice, instruments developed by ifeu in the project "Environmentally friendly procurement of cars by public authorities", funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU), are intended to provide support. Procurers from the federal states of Berlin, Brandenburg and Hesse involved in the project as well as other stakeholders were included in the development process.
New methodology paper: LCAst - Prospective life cycle assessments
In sustainability research, the term 'prospective life cycle assessment' has become established for future-oriented life cycle assessment studies - both for product life cycle assessments in a future economic system and for analyses of the transformation scenarios themselves. The research activities at ifeu in this field and the resulting computer-aided analysis methods - in particular involving the ecoinvent life cycle assessment database - run under the name "LCAst" - a keyword that combines the terms "LCA" (life cycle assessment) and "cast" (prediction). This methodology paper describes the development to date at ifeu and provides an outlook on potential and possible applications.
Results from the "FlyingLess" project in the Nature portfolio journal "Climate Action"
Successful research - less flying. The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from business air travel is one of the most effective climate protection levers in the scientific community, but is associated with significant trade-offs. In the Nature portfolio journal npj Climate Action, Susann Görlinger and Caroline Merrem (both ifeu Institut für Energie- und Umweltforschung gGmbH) together with Maximilian Jungmann and Nicole Aeschbach (both Heidelberg University) have published an article presenting the results and products from the "FlyingLess" project.
The Future of Oilseeds: Prospects for Plant based Proteins
Plant-based foods and alternative protein sources are playing an increasingly important role in sustainable nutrition. Against this background, the German Society for Fat Science (DGF) organised the symposium "The Future of Oilseeds: Prospects for Plant-based Proteins? The presentations revolved around the key question: How can high-quality proteins for food production be obtained from protein-containing oil plants and legumes, but also from exotic plants? Andreas Detzel, Managing Director, Scientific Director and Head of the Department of Industry and Products at ifeu in Heidelberg, lectured on "Sustainability Aspects of Protein Crops for Food Production". In his presentation, he demonstrated that food from plant proteins must be viewed in a very differentiated way.

Municipal heating planning for Heidelberg completed
After the Municipal Heat Plan for Heidelberg was presented to the public on 26 September, the heat plan was also presented to the Environment Committee of the City of Heidelberg on 18 October and unanimously adopted. The plan now available represents the strategic basis for deriving the activities necessary for a climate-neutral heat supply by 2040 at the latest.
FlyingLess Toolbox online. Successful research, less flying. This is how it works:
The NKI-funded project "FlyingLess" not only records actual conditions, but in particular develops practice-oriented tools with the help of which institutions can successfully plan, implement and permanently anchor projects to reduce air travel: One example is the FlyingLess "Toolbox". The modularly compiled slides, checklists, videos and documents, which can be individualised and used in their own selection and sequence depending on the situation and needs.
